What is a SEIT?

One of the first things people ask me when I tell them what I do for a living is, "What is a SEIT?"

A SEIT is a Special Education Itinerant Teacher who works one-on-one with a child both in school and at home to help integrate the child into the classroom and improve their skills and self esteem.

A SEIT is not the same thing as a shadow, whose purpose generally is to make sure a child makes it through the day.

Families engage SEITs for any number of reasons, particularly if their child struggles with social, emotional, or behavioral issues, has a hard time communicating effectively with peers, frequently interrupts the class, struggles with sensory integration issues, or is developmentally delayed.

SEITs help bridge the gap between school and home, which increases the likelihood of achieving the speech/language and/or social/emotional goals desired. There is no certain formula for achieving this success, as every SEIT case is different and is therefore customized to meet the needs of each individual child and family.

While part of my goal is to break the stigma surrounding learning differences, SEITs operate discreetly in the classroom to ensure that the child's negative behaviors are transitioned and eventually replaced with positive ones. SEITs work can last for just a few weeks or for several years.
